Increase environmentally friendly efforts

The scope of environmental information disclosure covers the TWSE office (located at Taipei 101) and the First Information Center, plus the TDCC, TWCA, and TIP.

Energy

1. Supporting renewable energy

To support the government's green energy transition policy with tangible actions, the TWSE purchased 900,000 kWh of green power from 2015 to 2017, and installed 11.34 kW solar panels on the roof of its First Information Center which generated 1,145 kWh in 2020, an equivalent of carbon reduction of 582.8 kg CO2e.

Note: The carbon reduction calculation is based on 0.509 kg CO2e/kWh published by the Bureau of Energy, MOEA in 2019.

2. Energy consumption

The TWSE and its subsidiaries mainly provide financial and IT services, and the majority of its energy consumption is by its offices (including public facilities) and information centers, as well as gasoline consumption by company cars and diesel fuel consumption by backup power generators. Even though energy is not a material issue for the TWSE, it still exerts great effort to energy conservation. The TWSE uses LED lights, a two-way lighting system (smart energy conservation); the central air conditioning water cooling system at our office makes ice at night and uses the ice in the day, and two of our five elevators are used as reserves.

Greenhouse gas emissions

Greenhouse gas emissions is the sum of Scope 1 carbon emission from direct energy use (diesel fuel and gasoline) and Scope 2 carbon emission is from indirect energy use (emissions from electricity consumption).

Going paperless

1.Paperless office

The TWSE and its subsidiaries actively promote methods for a paperless office to meet carbon reduction requirements.

Note: Carbon reduction is 4 kg CO2e for every pack of 500 pieces of A4 size paper according to the Environmental Protection Administration Taiwan Product Carbon Footprint Website.

THE TWSE

  • Effectively reduced paper usage by promoting electronic or digital systems for human resource management system, data center visitor system, reimbursement system, and user service platform for the data center.
  • Participated in the electronic official document exchange system established by the regulatory authority; saved roughly 1.75 million pieces of A4 size paper by using electronic documents in the official document management system in 2020.
  • Introduced e-invoices, reducing approximately 35,000 paper invoices a year. Electronic reimbursement was also introduced, reducing approximately 2,200 paper documents a year.
  • Promoted a paperless office to reduce paper usage of over 50% along with the use of iPads in meetings and the use of wireless projectors to further achieve the goal of going paperless.

THE TDCC

  • Promoted the online operations of various systems, including the online signature verification system for electronic official documents, accounting management system, attendance records, reports and forms, media files, and inventory. To save paper, the TWSE adopts the use of iPads in meetings rather than printing out meeting documents on paper.

THE TWCA

  • Developed an attendance system in place of the paper application of leave and business trips. Sponsored paperless meetings to effectively decrease paper use.

TIP

  • Introduced an electronic attendance system, to effectively lessen paper use.

2.Paperless policy

The TWSE and its subsidiaries, in addition to establishing internal on-line filing, also actively advocate electronic filing for listed companies of relevant procedures. This not only improves the effectiveness of information integration and transmission, but also influences others in fulfilling the carbon reduction requirements.

Save energy and reduce waste

1. Improve energy and resource efficiency

The implementation of continuous trading and intraday odd lot trading has provided investors with a variety of ways to participate in the market, lowered the minimum barrier to investment, and attracted students and young investors to make small investments. To meet the ever-growing demand for trading, the TWSE has continued to establish high-efficiency information systems that provide quality service, stability, and improved energy and resource efficiency.

In 2020, the TWSE's Power Usage Effectiveness (PUENote ) was 1.78, and the company aims to continue lowering its PUE ratio by conserving energy through the HVAC system, improving the operation environment of the server rooms, and conducting regular maintenance checks to reduce energy consumption, thereby achieving the goal of reducing carbon emissions.

Note: Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is calculated by dividing "the total power usage by the data center" by "the total power usage of ICT equipment in the server rooms." Therefore, decreasing the PUE ratio toward one signifies progress toward reducing electricity consumption and carbon emissions.

2.Reuse and recycle

The TWSE continues to implement waste sorting and recycling, as well as recycling electronic waste when replacing and upgrading computers. This serves to reduce the production of waste materials, form a cycle wherein resources are reused, and do its part to create a low-carbon and sustainable home for everyone.
